Using ChatGPT for Vinted listings: prompts, limits and checking
Yes, ChatGPT or another AI assistant can write a decent Vinted listing in seconds, on one condition: you give it the facts yourself (brand, size, fabric, measurements, flaws). AI is very good at structuring and rewording. It's also very good at making things up. You still have to check it, especially size, fabric and condition.
You'll find copy-ready prompts, the mistakes AI makes most often, and a six-point checklist for reviewing listings.
Is it worth using ChatGPT to write Vinted descriptions?
Yes, especially if you list a lot of items or if writing is what holds you back. The gain in structure and time is real. It's zero if you don't check.
What AI does well:
- Structuring a readable description: condition, measurements, fabric, care tips, shipping.
- Varying the wording from one listing to the next, when you list ten pairs of jeans in one evening.
- Suggesting several titles from the same information.
- Translating a listing if you also sell to buyers in other countries.
What it does badly:
- Guessing a fabric, a size or a collection year from a photo.
- Keeping it simple: without instructions, it writes long descriptions full of adjectives.
- Knowing how Vinted works: categories, sizes, what buyers are really looking for.
Vinted itself is adding more and more automatic help when you list, such as suggesting item details from the photo. There too, the app asks you to check what's been filled in.
What prompt should you use to write a Vinted listing?
A good prompt contains three things: the facts, the format you want, and what not to do. Here's a template to copy and fill in.
You are writing a Vinted listing in British English, in a simple, direct tone.
Use ONLY the information below. Do not make anything up.
If a piece of information is missing, do not mention it.
Item: straight-leg jeans
Brand: Levi's, 501 model
Label size: W30 L32
Flat measurements: waist 39 cm, inside leg 80 cm
Fabric: 100% cotton (read from the label)
Colour: raw blue
Condition: very good condition, slight fading on the left hem
Shipping: within 48 hours
Give me:
1. Three titles of 50 characters maximum, with brand, type, size, colour.
2. A description of 5 to 7 lines: condition, measurements, fabric, flaw, shipping.
No emojis, no superlatives, no hashtags.
This prompt forces the AI to stick to your facts. The line "Do not make anything up. If a piece of information is missing, do not mention it" prevents most mistakes.
For titles, keep in mind the order buyers type in: brand, type, detail, size, colour. Our method for writing a good Vinted title explains why.
What prompt should you use for a batch of listings?
When you list ten similar items, ask for variation in tone and order, not in content:
Here are 5 item records (one per line, fields separated by ;).
For each one, write a title and a description following the previous
rules. Vary the wording from one listing to the next, but do not add
any information that isn't in the record.
You can prepare your records in a spreadsheet, then paste the rows. That's where the time saving becomes obvious.
What mistakes does ChatGPT make in Vinted listings?
Always the same ones, and they can cost you a dispute. A buyer who receives an item that doesn't match the description can open a claim.
- Invented fabric: "100% wool" when the label says 30% wool.
- Wrong size conversion: a W30 listed as "size 12" when it depends on the brand.
- Flaw glossed over: the AI rewords "slight stain" as "tiny, barely visible sign of wear".
- Pointless promises: "perfect for any occasion", "a timeless piece".
- Keyword dumps: a list of hashtags that clutters the description. See what really works for tags and hashtags.
How do you check a listing written by AI?
By comparing it, field by field, with the label and your measurements. It takes 30 seconds per listing if you always follow the same order.
Check an AI listing in 6 points
- 1
Brand and model: identical to the label, spelled correctly.
- 2
Size: the one on the label, with no guesswork conversion.
- 3
Fabric: copied from the label, never inferred.
- 4
Measurements: exact figures, in centimetres.
- 5
Flaws: all present, described as clearly as in the photo.
- 6
Length: cut anything that doesn't help the buyer decide.
If you only do one thing, do point 5. A hidden flaw, even one hidden by wording that's too soft, is the number one cause of returns and bad reviews.
Is the free version of ChatGPT enough?
For writing listings from facts you provide, a free version of an AI assistant is usually enough. Paid versions mainly offer more usage and advanced features. The exact limits change often, so check them on the tool's website.
The other question is practical: copying and pasting between ChatGPT and Vinted for every item is still manual. For 5 items a week, no problem. For 40 items in one listing session, the back-and-forth becomes the longest task.
How much time does AI save?
Example: writing a listing by hand takes about 5 minutes (title, description, checking). With a well-prepared prompt, allow 1 minute to generate and 1 minute to check. For 30 listings a week, you go from 2 hours 30 minutes to 1 hour. The gain grows if you work in batches.
The time spent doesn't disappear completely: you still need to photograph, measure, fill in the Vinted fields (category, size, condition, price) and publish. And once online, listings that don't sell within a few weeks need a nudge.
Listing in bulk and reviving older listings are exactly the repetitive tasks Revendor runs for you, while keeping your review on what matters.
Can AI set the price of my item?
Not reliably. A general-purpose assistant can't see recent sales on Vinted and may give you a price out of nowhere. To set a price:
- look at similar items that have sold (same brand, same condition);
- compare with listings that have been online for a long time, which are often overpriced;
- leave room for negotiation, because buyers can offer you up to 40% less than your price, according to Vinted's help page on offers.
AI can, however, help you word your pricing policy in the description: "price firm", "discount on bundles".
Frequently asked questions
Does Vinted ban listings written by ChatGPT?
Nothing in Vinted's rules targets AI-assisted writing as such. What matters is that the listing is accurate and not misleading. You remain responsible for what's written.
Can I give ChatGPT a photo so it writes the listing?
Yes, many assistants accept images. But AI can get the fabric, size or brand wrong. Always give it the label information as text and check the result.
How long should a Vinted description be?
Long enough that the buyer doesn't need to ask a question: condition, measurements, fabric, flaws, shipping. In practice, five to eight lines are enough for most clothes.
Do I have to say the listing was written by AI?
It isn't a requirement Vinted displays. What matters is that the content is true. An accurate, clear listing sells better, whether it was written by hand or with help.
Can ChatGPT write listings in several languages?
Yes, it's one of its strengths. Keep the brand, size and measurements unchanged, and check the translation for fabric terms, which are often mistranslated.
