How to sell on Vinted: a step-by-step beginner's guide
To sell on Vinted, you create a free account, take sharp photos in daylight, fill in the title, category, brand, size and condition, then set a price by looking at similar items that have already sold. When a buyer pays, you have 5 working days to send the item, and the money lands in your balance once it has been delivered.
This guide takes you from zero to your first sale. You will know what to do at each step, how long it takes, and which mistakes keep beginners stuck.
Is it free to sell on Vinted?
Yes. For private sellers, listing and selling costs nothing. According to Vinted's help page, you receive the price you set, with no commission taken.
The buyer pays the fees. They pay the "Buyer Protection" fee, which according to Vinted is made up of a fixed €0.70 plus a percentage of the item price (usually 5%), on top of postage.
€0
That is what a private seller pays to list and sell. The Buyer Protection fee (€0.70 + usually 5%) is paid by the buyer, according to Vinted's help centre.
In practice, when you compare your price with another seller's, compare the prices shown on the listings. The buyer will see a slightly higher total, but that is the same for everyone.
The only possible costs on the seller's side are optional: a paid Bump to push a listing, or kit for your photos.
How do you set up a seller account people trust?
You sign up with your email address or through one of the login options offered at sign-up. Vinted is for adults only: the platform may ask you to verify your age with ID.
Then three settings make a difference before you even post your first listing:
- A profile picture. It doesn't have to be your face: a photo of your clothes rail, a pile of folded clothes, an object that suits you. An empty profile looks abandoned.
- A short bio. Two lines are enough: what you sell, whether you do bundles, your usual dispatch times.
- Your payment details. Add your bank account from the start. You will save time the day you want to transfer your earnings.
The first hurdle for a new seller is having no reviews. You can't get around it, but you can shrink it: reply to messages quickly, post quickly and pack neatly. Your first reviews will come from that.
How do you post your first listing on Vinted?
A Vinted listing is filled in over six steps, and the help page "How to upload an item" lists them in this order. Here is how to get them right first time.
Post your first listing in 15 minutes
- 1
Pick an item that is easy to sell: a well-known brand, in good condition, in season. Avoid starting with a rare or damaged piece.
- 2
Take 5 to 8 photos in daylight, near a window, without flash. The first photo shows the whole item. Vinted accepts up to 20.
- 3
Write a title that starts with the type of item, then the brand, colour and size. Example: "Uniqlo black merino wool roll neck jumper size M".
- 4
Choose the most specific category possible, then the brand, size, colour and material from the lists offered.
- 5
State the real condition and describe any flaws, showing them in the photos too.
- 6
Set the price after looking at similar items, then select the parcel size that matches the real weight.
Why fill in every field, even the optional ones?
Because buyers use filters. Someone looking for trousers in a size 10, in beige, selects those filters. If your colour isn't filled in, your listing drops out of their results. Vinted even says, on its page about content recommendations, that it uses category, brand, size, colour, condition and search filters to rank items.
How do you write a good title?
Write the words the buyer types, not a mood sentence. "Gorgeous little summer dress" matches no search. "Sézane blue linen midi dress size 10" matches several. We go through the method in our guide to writing a good Vinted title.
How do you price your first listing?
Search for your item (same brand, same type, same condition) and look at two things: the price of listings still live, and the price of listings already sold. Put yourself slightly below the average of live listings. For a first sale, speed matters more than the last few euros: it gets you your first review.
Example: a pair of Levi's 501 jeans in good condition is listed between €18 and €30 by other sellers. At €20, you are at the low end of the range without underselling. Leave a little room for an offer: lots of buyers negotiate.
What happens when someone buys your item?
You get a notification and the countdown starts. According to the help page on cancellations, you have 5 working days to download the label and send the parcel. After that, the order is cancelled.
The steps of a sale, seller side
| Step | What you do | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | You get the notification and the shipping label | Immediate |
| Packing | You pack neatly, with the label stuck down flat | Ideally the same day |
| Sending | You drop the parcel at the pick-up point or post office shown | 5 working days maximum |
| Delivery | The buyer collects the parcel and confirms everything is OK | Depends on the carrier |
| Payment | The money moves to "Available balance" in your balance | On confirmation, or 2 days after receipt |
On payment, Vinted explains that the order is completed when the buyer clicks "Everything is OK", or automatically 2 days after receipt if they do nothing. You can then transfer the money to your bank account.
One simple tip: post within 24 hours. A buyer who receives their item quickly is more willing to leave a good review, and your first ratings build your reputation.
Why aren't my Vinted items selling when the listings are good?
This is beginners' number one frustration: a clean listing, a fair price, and days without a single favourite. The main reason is mechanical. Among its ranking criteria, Vinted lists the "time elapsed since the item was added". A listing ages, and every new listing posted for your search jumps ahead of yours.
The cost adds up fast. Example: you have 40 items live at an average of €15, so €600 of clothes sitting in a wardrobe. If half of them slide to page 10 of the results after two weeks, that is €300 of stock almost nobody sees any more.
The fix is to refresh your listings regularly: repost them, adjust a price, add a photo. We explain how often in our article on when to repost your items.
To be honest: if you sell five items a month, reposting by hand takes ten minutes and you need nothing else. The maths changes once you have a few dozen listings.
Reposting 60 listings by hand means deleting, recreating and re-uploading the photos, one by one, several times a week. That is exactly the task Revendor runs in the background while you get on with sending parcels.
Do you have to declare your Vinted sales for tax?
If you sell your own second-hand belongings, those sales are generally not taxable in France. However, Vinted reports every year to the tax authorities the details of sellers who go over 30 sales or €2,000 of takings in a year, under the European DAC7 directive described on impots.gouv.fr.
Being reported doesn't mean being taxed. Things change if you buy to resell: then it is a business activity. Everything is covered in our guide to declaring your Vinted sales.
Where should you start today?
Start small. Pick three easy items, photograph them this evening near a window, and list them with every field filled in. Tomorrow, look at the views and favourites. You will know straight away whether your price and your first photo are catching attention.
Consistency does the rest: a few listings a week, quick dispatch, and listings that stay fresh.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to sell something on Vinted?
It mostly depends on the brand, the season and the price. A well-known brand, well photographed and priced at market value, can go in a few days. An out-of-season or unbranded piece can sit for several weeks. Vinted doesn't publish an average time to sell.
Do I pay postage when I sell on Vinted?
No. Postage is paid by the buyer when they order. You download the label provided by Vinted, print it or show the code at the drop-off point, and hand in the parcel.
How many photos should a Vinted listing have?
Vinted accepts up to 20 photos per listing. Between 5 and 8 photos are enough for most clothes: front, back, label, a close-up of the fabric and any flaws. The first photo should show the whole item.
When do I get paid for a Vinted sale?
The payment moves to "Available balance" when the buyer confirms everything is OK, or automatically 2 days after they receive the order. You can then transfer it to your bank account.
Can you sell on Vinted if you are under 18?
Vinted is for adults only. A minor has to use an account in the name of a parent or legal guardian, who accepts the terms and remains responsible for the account's activity.
