Vinted returns: when you can return an item, who pays, how it works
On Vinted, a return is only guaranteed if the item is significantly not as described in the listing. An item the buyer doesn't like or that doesn't fit can only be returned if the seller agrees. In every case, the buyer pays the return postage, unless agreed otherwise, and has 5 working days to send the parcel back.
You'll see when a return is possible, who pays for what, the deadlines to meet on both sides, and a method for handling each return request calmly as a seller.
Can you return an item on Vinted?
Yes, but not in every case. Vinted distinguishes two situations, according to its help page on returns.
The item is significantly not as described. The return is covered by Buyer Protection. The buyer reports the problem within 2 days of delivery, and the return can be arranged.
The item matches the listing but the buyer doesn't like it. A size that doesn't sit right, a colour that doesn't suit, a change of heart: a return is only possible if the seller accepts it. There's no obligation.
What counts as an item not as described?
According to Vinted's page on items not as described, it's an item that doesn't match its description or photos: wrong colour, wrong size, missing parts, unmentioned damage (stain, tear, breakage), different material, counterfeit, not working.
The same page excludes items the buyer doesn't like or that don't suit them, as well as minor differences that don't affect use.
What about the 14-day right of withdrawal?
The 14-day right of withdrawal applies to distance purchases from a business, as France's official Service-Public.fr points out. It doesn't apply between private individuals. On Vinted, a purchase from a private seller therefore follows the platform's rules, not those of standard online shopping.
If you sell as a business on Vinted, your obligations are different. Our full review of Vinted Pro explains that status.
Who pays for returns on Vinted?
By default, the buyer. Vinted's help page on returns says the buyer pays for return postage, unless the seller agrees to cover it.
Once the return is approved, the buyer is refunded the item price, the Buyer Protection fee and the original shipping costs. Only the return postage stays with them, unless otherwise arranged.
Returns on Vinted: who pays and who decides
| Situation | Return possible? | Who pays return postage | Buyer's refund |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item not as described (hidden flaw, wrong size stated) | Yes, covered by Buyer Protection | The buyer, unless agreed otherwise | Price, protection fee, original postage |
| Item as described that the buyer doesn't like | Only if the seller agrees | To be negotiated, the buyer by default | Depending on the agreement |
| Minor difference that doesn't affect use | Not guaranteed | Not applicable | None, unless the seller makes a gesture |
| Order already completed | No, unless amicably arranged | To be negotiated | None through Vinted |
What are the deadlines for a Vinted return?
The deadlines are short and follow on from each other. Missing them can change the outcome.
- 2 days after delivery: the buyer must report the problem. After that, according to Vinted's refund policy, the order is completed and no refund is possible.
- 5 working days: once the return is requested, the buyer has this long to send the parcel.
- 2 days after receiving the return: the seller checks the item and confirms everything is OK. If they do nothing within that time, the buyer's refund is triggered.
That last deadline is the one sellers miss most often. Two days isn't long if you don't go to the pick-up point every day.
How should a seller handle a return request on Vinted?
The method depends on the reason for the return. Here's what to do, in order.
Handling a return request on Vinted
- 1
Read the request and look at the buyer's photos. Compare with your original listing.
- 2
Classify the request: genuinely not as described, simple disappointment, or a minor difference.
- 3
If the item is not as described, accept the return and reply politely: arguing would only delay the outcome.
- 4
If it's disappointment, decide whether you'll accept an amicable return. Nothing obliges you to.
- 5
If you refuse, calmly explain why, backing it up with the listing and the measurements given.
- 6
When the return parcel arrives, collect it quickly and open it while filming or photographing each step.
- 7
Check it's really your item, in the same condition, and confirm or report a problem within 2 days.
Is it a good idea to accept a return you don't have to?
Sometimes. If the item is easy to resell, comes back intact and the buyer is polite, accepting an amicable return can avoid a negative review. If the item is fragile, hard to resell, or the buyer is acting in bad faith, politely refusing is legitimate.
A simple rule: if the cost of a return (time, item tied up, risk of damage) is greater than what you risk by refusing, refuse.
Why does responsiveness change how a return turns out?
A return plays out in the inbox. A buyer who gets a quick, clear reply more readily accepts a reasoned refusal, or waits calmly for the return. One who waits two days with no news escalates to support, and the exchange gets harder for everyone.
And deadlines move fast: 2 days to check a return, 14 days to contest a dispute. If your inbox is overflowing, you run several accounts or simply have a side hustle, a return message can go unanswered while a deadline expires.
Following every ongoing conversation, on one or several accounts, without missing the request that matters, is the most draining part of selling in volume. Revendor gathers your Vinted messages into a single inbox and its AI agent handles routine questions, so you keep time for returns and disputes.
How do you protect yourself from return abuse?
The most feared abuse is a different item being sent back instead of the one sold, or an item returned damaged after use. You protect yourself mainly before shipping.
Photograph the item before shipping, with the size label and distinctive details visible (serial number, a characteristic small mark of wear). Vinted also recommends in its page on suspended orders that you photograph the parcel and its packaging and keep the shipping receipt.
Document opening the return parcel. Photos or video of the opening, the label, the condition.
Report within 2 days if it's not the right item or if it comes back damaged, with your before and after photos.
How do you reduce returns before they happen?
Most returns come from a gap between the listing and the item received. Narrow that gap and you reduce returns.
Give flat-lay measurements, not just the size on the label. An "M" doesn't fit the same across brands.
Show every flaw in close-up, and mention them in the description.
Describe the true colour if the photo doesn't capture it well.
State the material and thickness for clothing.
Our 10-point checklist for a listing that won't sell goes through these details, which also avoid unpleasant surprises on delivery.
Honestly, if you sell a few pieces a month with precise listings, you'll get very few returns. This guide is mostly for the day one comes in.
