Vinted vs eBay: 2026 fees, selling abroad and categories compared

By Revendor6 min read

Vinted vs eBay? Since 1 September 2026, both are free for private sellers based in France: the buyer pays for protection. The difference lies elsewhere. Vinted is still the go-to for fashion and kids' items. eBay becomes worth it for electronics, collectibles, expensive items and selling abroad, with lower buyer fees above a few euros.

What changed on eBay in 2026?

eBay scrapped selling fees for private sellers in France. According to eBay's official announcement, since 1 September 2026 private sellers on eBay.fr no longer pay selling fees and keep 100% of the price. If you sell from another country, check the rules on your local eBay site, as this change was announced for France.

There are conditions, set out in eBay's help page for private sellers:

  • the registered address must be in the European Economic Area;
  • 150 free listings a month, with fees beyond that;
  • some listing upgrades are still paid (reserve price, subtitle, second category);
  • fees may apply when the buyer has the item delivered outside the eurozone and Sweden.

In return, buyers now pay a Buyer Protection fee when they buy from a private seller based in France or Italy, according to eBay's help page on this fee. The model is therefore close to Vinted's.

How much does the buyer pay on Vinted and on eBay?

The two calculations differ, and eBay becomes cheaper for the buyer as the price goes up.

  • Vinted: a protection fee of "usually 5% + €0.70" according to Vinted's price list.
  • eBay: €0.10 per item, plus 7% on the first €20, 4% from €20 to €300, 2% from €300 to €4,000, nothing above. Calculated on the item price, excluding postage.

Protection fee paid by the buyer (private seller in France, September 2026)

Item priceVintedeBayDifference for the buyer
€10€1.20€0.80€0.40 less on eBay
€50€3.20€2.70€0.50 less on eBay
€200€10.70€8.70€2 less on eBay
€500€25.70€16.70€9 less on eBay

For you as a private seller, what you take home is the same: you receive your price on both (except for the eBay special cases listed above). The difference only matters to the buyer. On a €500 item, €9 less can tip a buyer who's comparing, especially for items sold on both platforms, like electronics.

Vinted says its fees also depend on the characteristics of the item and the order. The exact amount is always shown to the buyer before payment.

Worked example: a €200 console

You sell a console for €200. On Vinted, the buyer pays €210.70 plus postage. On eBay, €208.70 plus postage. You receive €200 either way. On eBay, though, you can also reach a Belgian, German or Spanish buyer looking for that exact model.

Vinted or eBay for selling abroad?

eBay, clearly. eBay is a global marketplace, with search by exact model number and buyers used to ordering from other countries. Vinted allows some sales between European countries, but its search and habits remain very local.

Two caveats on the eBay side. First, fees may apply if the buyer has the item delivered outside the eurozone and Sweden, for example to the UK or the US: check the fee table before opening up those countries. Second, shipping internationally demands more care (packaging, tracking, delivery times).

What should you sell on Vinted and what on eBay?

Short answer: everyday fashion on Vinted, items people search for by model number on eBay.

Choose the platform for each item

  1. 1

    Everyday clothes, shoes and kids' items: Vinted. Buyers search by brand, size and condition, and things move fast.

  2. 2

    Electronics, video games, cameras, computing: eBay first, for search by exact model and the international audience. Vinted as a backup.

  3. 3

    Collectibles (cards, figures, vinyl, watches): eBay, where collectors search for specific references and auctions let the market set the price.

  4. 4

    Technical car, motorbike and DIY parts: eBay, thanks to compatibility search.

  5. 5

    Luxury and rare vintage: test both, comparing prices on similar listings.

Should you sell by auction on eBay?

For a rare item whose value you don't know, yes: the auction brings out the price. For an everyday item, a fixed price is more predictable. Vinted has no auctions, but an offer system you control.

Can you sell on Vinted and eBay at the same time?

Yes, and it's often a smart move for electronics or collectibles. The rule: as soon as a sale comes in, take the listing down on the other platform. eBay tracks seller cancellations in its performance metrics, and a cancellation on Vinted leaves a disappointed buyer.

On tax, each platform reports its own data under the EU's DAC7 directive, from 30 sales or €2,000 a year per platform. No need to panic: we explain what that means in our guide to declaring your sales.

Why is Vinted still where you spend the most time?

Because Vinted is a feed. Listings slide down the results quickly, buyers negotiate a lot and often message before buying. On eBay, a well-indexed listing can stay findable for weeks. On Vinted, without bumping, it disappears within days.

Example: 100 Vinted listings, 20 messages and 8 offers a day. Between replies, counter-offers and bumps, that's an hour a day, not counting packing.

Revendor takes care of the part that's specific to Vinted: one inbox for all messages, counter-offers based on your tiers, reposting and sales tracking with your margin.

What if you only sell a few items?

Then keep it simple: fashion on Vinted, a technical item on eBay, and no tools. If you sell as a business, the rules change on both platforms: read our review of Vinted Pro before you start.
