Vinted scams for buyers: how to spot a fake seller and buy safely

By Revendor7 min read

To buy safely on Vinted, always pay with the Buy now button, stay in Vinted's messages and check the seller's profile before paying. A very low price, a request to pay outside the app or an external link are the three most reliable signs of a fake seller. Outside the Buy now button, you're no longer protected.

You'll see how Buyer Protection works, the signals that give away a fake seller, a two-minute check before every purchase, and what to do if you've been caught out.

How does Buyer Protection work on Vinted?

Buyer Protection applies automatically when you pay with the Buy now button. According to Vinted's page on Buyer Protection, it covers a refund if the item doesn't arrive, arrives damaged or is significantly not as described in the listing.

It has a cost, shown before you pay: a protection fee made up of a fixed amount and a percentage of the item price. And it has a time limit: you must report a problem with the "I have a problem" button within 2 days of delivery. After that, or if you've clicked "Everything is OK", the order is completed and a refund is no longer possible.

2 days

The time after delivery to report a problem and stay covered by Buyer Protection (Vinted help page).

What isn't covered?

Any payment made outside Vinted's system. According to Vinted's page on buying and paying safely, if you pay without using the Buy now button, you aren't covered and Vinted can't help you if there's a problem.

That's why almost every scam targeting buyers has the same goal: getting you to pay somewhere else.

What are the signs of a fake seller on Vinted?

One sign on its own proves nothing. Several signs together should stop you.

A price that's too good. A sought-after pair of trainers at a quarter of their usual price, a designer bag for €40: either it's a fake, or it's bait to get you off the platform.

A request to pay elsewhere. Bank transfer, PayPal "friends and family", mobile payment: the seller wants to "avoid the fees". What you mostly avoid is the protection.

An external link. A link to a "Vinted payment form", a delivery page or a QR code. According to Vinted's page on phishing, scammers imitate Vinted via messages, texts, emails and QR codes to get hold of login and bank details.

Moving to WhatsApp or email. An honest seller has no reason to leave Vinted's messages.

An empty or new profile with no reviews at all and several valuable items listed. Not necessarily a scam, but a reason to be doubly careful.

Photos that aren't theirs. Catalogue photos, very different settings from one listing to the next, no photo of the label. A reverse image search often reveals photos copied from elsewhere.

Urgency. "Several people are interested, decide quickly." The pressure is there to stop you checking.

Which scams target Vinted buyers?

The scenarios vary, but they often come back to the same mechanisms.

Common scams aimed at Vinted buyers

ScamHow it worksHow to avoid it
Off-platform paymentThe seller suggests a bank transfer or direct payment, then disappearsOnly pay with the Buy now button
Fake payment linkA link or QR code imitates a Vinted page and captures your cardNever pay through a link you've received, use the app
CounterfeitBranded item at a knock-down price, not authenticCheck the listing, use item verification if offered
Ghost listingStolen photos, no real itemImage search, profile, reviews
"Click Everything is OK"The seller pushes you to confirm before you've checked the itemOnly confirm after opening the parcel

Is item verification worth it?

For some eligible items, Vinted offers to add an item or electronics verification service, as its page on buying safely explains. On a valuable item, especially a branded one, it's an extra layer of protection worth considering. For a €5 T-shirt, it isn't worth it.

How do you check a seller before buying on Vinted?

Two minutes is enough. Do this check for any purchase over about twenty euros or on a branded item.

Check a Vinted seller in 2 minutes

  1. 1

Open the profile: how long they've been a member, number of reviews, what recent comments say.

  2. 2

Look at their other listings: consistent photo style, same setting, visible labels.

  3. 3

Compare the price with similar listings: a huge gap on the low side is a warning sign.

  4. 4

Ask a precise question in Vinted messages (a measurement, a flaw, a photo of the label) and watch the response.

  5. 5

Refuse any offer of payment, links or conversations outside the app.

  6. 6

Only pay with the Buy now button, then check the item on arrival before clicking "Everything is OK".

Step 4 is often the most revealing. A seller who really has the item sends a photo of the label or a measurement without any trouble. A fake seller dodges, or pushes towards WhatsApp.

What should you do when the parcel arrives?

Open it quickly, ideally filming the unboxing for a valuable item. Compare it with the listing: size, colour, condition, flaws mentioned.

If something's wrong, click "I have a problem" within 2 days, with clear photos. Don't click "Everything is OK" until you've checked everything, even if the seller insists.

And if the item disappoints you without being not as described, bear in mind that isn't covered: according to Vinted, an item you don't like or a minor difference doesn't entitle you to a guaranteed return.

What if you buy to resell?

Resellers buy often, which makes them more exposed. Buying ten bundles a week means ten sellers to check, ten conversations to follow, ten parcels to inspect within 2 days. At that pace, the mistake comes on the day you go too fast: an "Everything is OK" clicked before opening the parcel, a message from the seller never read.

Following your buying and selling conversations side by side, on one or several accounts, quickly gets messy. Revendor brings together the messages from your Vinted accounts and syncs your purchases and sales, so every conversation and every order stays in view.

What should you do if you've been scammed on Vinted?

It all depends on how you paid.

You paid with the Buy now button. You're covered. Report the problem from the order within 2 days of delivery, or request a refund if the parcel doesn't arrive. According to Vinted's refund policy, a lost parcel investigation can be opened when the tracking shows a loss or after 25 working days.

You paid outside the platform. Vinted won't be able to help you. Contact your bank as soon as possible to try to dispute the payment, and report the seller's account on Vinted to protect others.

You entered your card on a fake site. Call your bank immediately to block the card. Change your Vinted password and forward the fraudulent message to [email protected], the address Vinted gives for reporting phishing. In France, Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr can guide you through the steps; elsewhere, contact your country's official fraud reporting service.

If it's your account that's been affected (hacking, restriction), our guide on blocked or restricted Vinted accounts helps you see things clearly.

Should you be afraid of buying on Vinted?

No. The vast majority of sales go through without a hitch, and Buyer Protection covers the most common cases as long as you stay within the rules. The scams that work are almost always the ones where the buyer steps outside them: paying elsewhere, an external link, confirming too quickly.

Stick to the golden rule: in the app, with the Buy now button, and only confirm after you've checked.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know if a Vinted seller is legit?

Look at their reviews and what they say, how old the profile is, and whether their photos are consistent. Ask a precise question in the messages: a seller who really has the item answers without difficulty.

Do you get a refund if you pay outside Vinted?

No. According to Vinted, payments made outside the Buy now button aren't covered by Buyer Protection, and the platform can't step in. Only your bank may be able to dispute the transaction.

What does Vinted Buyer Protection cover?

It covers a refund if the item doesn't arrive, arrives damaged or is significantly not as described. You must report the problem within 2 days of delivery.

A Vinted seller has sent me a payment link: what should I do?

Don't click. On Vinted, you only pay with the Buy now button in the app. A payment link or QR code sent by a member is a sign of phishing: report the account.

Should you click "Everything is OK" as soon as the parcel arrives?

Only after opening and checking the item. Once the order is confirmed, no refund is possible. If you do nothing, the order completes on its own after 2 days.
