Vinted parcel lost: what to do as a seller and as a buyer

By Revendor7 min read

If your Vinted parcel seems to be lost, don't panic: the money stays held during the investigation. According to Vinted, an investigation opens when tracking shows a loss or when more than 25 working days have passed since shipping. The buyer is then refunded. The seller can be compensated depending on the carrier, provided they used the Vinted label.

You'll see the official deadlines, the difference between a late parcel and a lost one, what the seller should do and what the buyer should do, and how to limit your loss if it happens to you.

When is a Vinted parcel considered lost?

A parcel isn't lost because the tracking hasn't moved for three days. It's officially lost in two cases, according to Vinted's refund policy:

  • the tracking status shows the parcel appears to be lost;
  • more than 25 working days have passed since it was shipped.

Before that, the parcel can still be delivered. It's frustrating, but that's the rule: Vinted only launches an investigation or a refund once one of these two conditions is met. In the meantime, the payment stays secure, neither paid to the seller nor returned to the buyer.

25 working days

The time after shipping beyond which Vinted can open a lost parcel investigation, even without a loss status (Vinted refund policy).

Late, stuck or lost parcel: what's the difference?

Late: the tracking is moving, but slowly. Nothing to do except keep the buyer informed.

Stuck: the tracking hasn't moved for several days. Often a sorting issue or an overloaded drop-off point. Keep an eye on it, and contact support if it drags on.

Returned to sender: the buyer didn't collect the parcel in time, or there was a problem with the address. That's a different procedure, described below.

Lost: loss status displayed, or 25 working days exceeded. The investigation can start.

What should the buyer do if their Vinted parcel is lost?

The buyer has almost nothing to do, apart from waiting out the deadlines and keeping an eye on the tracking. Their money is protected by Buyer Protection, which covers parcels that don't arrive, according to Vinted's page on Buyer Protection.

In practice, as a buyer:

  • check the tracking in the order conversation;
  • if the parcel shows as delivered to a pick-up point, collect it quickly: collection periods are limited;
  • if the status shows a loss or 25 working days have passed, request a refund from the order;
  • never agree to sort things out outside Vinted (bank transfer, "direct" refund): you'd lose your protection.

Once the investigation concludes in the buyer's favour, Vinted refunds the order. The investigation itself can take several weeks.

What should the seller do if the parcel is lost?

For the seller, the issue is getting compensated for the lost item. And that's decided before shipping.

According to Vinted's page on compensation for sellers, you can be compensated if three conditions are met:

  1. the parcel was sent with a prepaid label generated by Vinted;
  2. it was properly packaged;
  3. the carrier confirms the loss or damage.

Without a Vinted label, the same page says you need to go directly to the carrier.

How much compensation does the seller get?

The amount depends on the carrier, with a cap for each one. For France, Vinted lists the following maximums:

Maximum seller compensation for a lost parcel (Vinted France)

CarrierCompensation cap
Vinted GoUp to €500
Mondial RelayUp to €25
Chronopost Shop2ShopUp to €20
ColissimoUp to €18
DHL ExpressUp to €15

For items with the verification service, compensation can go up to €500 or the item's full value. Vinted also states that an investigation can take several weeks. If you sell from another country, check the carriers and caps shown on Vinted's help page for your country.

Example: a jacket sold for €60, sent with Mondial Relay in France and lost. The buyer gets a full refund. You can be compensated up to €25. You're €35 short compared with the sale. On a valuable item, the choice of carrier therefore makes a big difference to your loss.

What steps should you follow when a parcel doesn't arrive?

Here's what to do, as a seller or a buyer, from the first day of delay through to compensation.

Dealing with a Vinted parcel that doesn't arrive

  1. 1

    Check the tracking in the Vinted conversation and note the date of the last movement.

  2. 2

    Let the other party know by message: a reassuring word avoids a needless dispute.

  3. 3

    If the tracking has been frozen for several days, contact Vinted support from the order.

  4. 4

    Gather your evidence: drop-off receipt, photo of the sealed parcel with its label, photo of the item.

  5. 5

    Wait for the loss status or the end of the 25 working days: that's when the investigation can start.

  6. 6

    As the buyer, request the refund; as the seller, follow the investigation and provide your evidence if support asks for it.

  7. 7

    Once the carrier confirms the loss, the seller's compensation follows, within the carrier's cap.

Why is communication what prevents the worst?

A late parcel doesn't necessarily become a problem. What turns it into a conflict is silence. A buyer who hears nothing for a week imagines the worst, leaves a negative review, or accuses the seller of never having sent it.

On the other hand, a message from the seller as soon as the tracking freezes ("I can see the parcel isn't moving, I'm keeping an eye on it and will keep you posted") almost always calms things down. It's simple, but it means seeing every message and replying quickly, even when you have several sales on the go.

When you have twenty parcels in transit and messages arriving on several accounts, a worried buyer can easily be left waiting for a day. Revendor gathers the messages from all your Vinted accounts into a single inbox, so no question about a parcel goes unanswered.

What if the parcel is returned to sender?

That's a different case from a loss. The parcel isn't lost: it's coming back to the seller, often because the buyer didn't collect it in time.

According to Vinted's page on returned parcels, if the parcel reaches neither the buyer nor the seller within 15 working days, Vinted investigates. When the parcel does make it back to the seller, the order is cancelled and the buyer gets a full refund: item price, shipping costs and the Buyer Protection fee.

For the seller, that means getting the item back and listing it again. For the buyer, it's a lesson: pick-up point collection periods are short, so go quickly.

How can you reduce the risk of loss?

You don't control the carrier, but you do control several things.

Stick the label on completely flat. A creased barcode, or one covered with shiny tape, is hard to read at sorting.

Remove old labels. A reused box with an old barcode can be sent to the wrong place.

Choose the carrier based on value. For an expensive item, a carrier with a high compensation cap limits your loss if the worst happens.

Keep all your evidence until the sale is completed: drop-off receipt, photos of the parcel and the item.

Avoid drop-off points you know are overloaded. If a point has already lost your parcels, make a note and use another one.

If your sales volume grows, a regular routine helps you not forget anything. Our 20-minute routine to sell faster gives you a base for structuring your day as a seller.
